- Referrals taken from GPs/Advanced Practitioners/ED/SHIP/ PAC
- Referrals and advice to be made to:
- EGU directly by phone (01752 763676 – Monday to Friday 8-6pm) or
- on-call gynaecological SHO (bleep 0406) or
- on-call registrar/consultant (bleep 0311)
Referral Criteria
- Acute abdominal pain for less than one weeks’ duration
- Torrential menorrhagia with Hb less than 90 or symptoms of anaemia
- Persistent bleeding post miscarriage, termination, delivery, MVA or ERPOC
- Lost coils
- Post-operative complications that are likely to require ultrasound
(Please note that all gynaecology patients can contact Ocean ward for advice for 1 week post-operatively on 01752 430026)
Red Flags
ED or 999 should continue to be used for life threatening injuries and illnesses.
Urgent Advice and Referral
Referral Criteria

Exclusion Criteria
- Haemodynamically unstable patient
- Longstanding history of pain or bleeding (unless acute episode). Refer these patients to Gynaecology outpatients or post-menopausal bleeding clinic
- Postmenopausal bleeding
- Patient requiring a stretcher or bed

Patients attending EGU should report to Lancaster suite main reception and wait in the Gynaecology outpatients area.
