COVID-19: General & Colorectal Surgery service guide

This information provides guidance on the management of General & Colorectal surgery patients in Western locality during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2WW referrals

2WW referrals should continue to be referred as normal. Referrals will be vetted on a case by case basis and managed appropriately.

Urgent referrals

All referrals will be reviewed prior to the allocation of appointment. The Surgical teams will continue providing clinical review for urgent cases. Again, these will be prioritised on a case by case basis.

The trust is following national advice on management, but please be aware of limitations that might affect waiting times:

  • Diagnostics – capacity is limited for endoscopy and colonoscopy and restricted for CT
  • Theatres – only critical or urgent cases are being operated on

Patients will usually be telephoned, and appropriate investigations arranged. If necessary, they can be seen face-to-face.

Please ensure that a practice-based system is in place to check daily for returning referrals with A&G.

Routine referrals

All new routine referrals will be clinically triaged. Those accepted will either be added to a waiting list or, if appropriate, A&G will be given.

There may be some provision in the new future for telephone consultation for appropriate patients to reduce delays.

Please ensure that a practice-based system is in place to check daily for returning referrals with A&G.

In order to support secondary care to see the patients who need to be seen, please could we ask you to put as much detail in your referral letter as possible and clearly mark whether this referral is urgent or routine.

Prior to making a referral, please ensure that the appropriate CRG has been reviewed and all suggested management options have been considered.

Please ensure that a practice-based system is in place to check daily for returning referrals with A&G.

Urgent advice

Urgent surgical advice can be sought by contacting on-call surgical Registrar via Derriford Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU): 01752 245060

Advice & Guidance

Advice and Guidance will continue to be given by letter; we are looking to develop A+G through referrals via e-RS.

Please ensure that a practice-based system is in place to check daily for returning A&G.

COVID-19 High risk patient advice

All colorectal in the presence of symptoms of COVID-19 should be discussed with the admitting team who will assess along hospital guidelines.

High risk patients will be contacted via letter regarding steps they need to take to protect themselves during the pandemic.
