Smoking Cessation - Torbay

Scope

  • Raising the issue of smoking with patients
  • Delivery of brief advice regarding smoking cessation
  • Referral of smokers for local support including pregnant or breastfeeding women, adolescents, those in primary and secondary care settings and those awaiting elective surgery
  • Benefits of smoking cessation
  • Use of pharmacotherapy, including: Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), Varenicline (Champix) and Bupropion (Zyban)

  • Training health professionals in providing advice on Rapid Smoking Cytisine

Management

Very brief advice for smoking cessation (<30 sec)

  • An intervention designed for GPs and all other health care professionals to raise the issue and promote engagement with stop smoking services
  • Simple advice (less than 30 seconds) from a GP/Health professional is one of the most important triggers for a quit attempt
Ask
  • Are you a smoker?
  • Are you smoking at all these days?
  • How do you feel about your smoking?
  • Establish and record smoking status
Advise
  • Example Script: "Did you know the best way to stop is with a combination of support & medication which is available on the NHS. You are four times more likely to stop & stay stopped"
Act
  • Example Script: "We have a registered stop smoking advisor here at the surgery. An appointment with them to discuss your treatment options can offer you your best chance of stopping. Are you happy for me to refer you now?'
  • "We have a specialist stop smoking service here in Torbay. An appointment with them to discuss your treatment options can offer you your best chance of stopping. Would you like their details?"
Patients who decline
  • Record in patient notes that the offer of support has been offered and declined
  • Reinforce the roll of pharmacists in assisting patients with NRT and quit attempts if patient does not want to engage with other support services. Many pharmacies in Plymouth also have in house registered stop smoking advisors
GP in-house registered community advisor
  • Refer the client to the person/s in your practice who is/are responsible for delivering stop smoking interventions
  • They will carry out stop smoking interventions for patients registered within Practice (either as permanent patients or temporary residents) according to the Locally Enhanced Service for 'Stop Smoking' Interventions
Training
  • A free online training module has been developed by the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training ("NCSCT") Short modules, amongst others, include how to deliver very brief advice to smokers and smoking cessation medications. They will take less than 30 mins to complete

  • The Stop Smoking Service is clinically proven to be the most effective way of quitting. Quitters are 4 times more likely to succeed with clinical support from the NHS Stop Smoking Service
