2.11 Antifibrinolytic drugs and haemostatics

Tranexamic acid
  • Tablets 500mg (£4.91 = 60 tablets)
  • Solution for injection ampoules 500mg/5ml
  • Mouthwash 5% (300ml) (unlicensed preparation)

Indications

  • Local fibrinolysis
  • Menorrhagia
  • Hereditary angioedema
  • Epistaxis

Dose

  • Local fibrinolysis, 1–1.5g (or 15–25mg/kg) 2–3 times daily
  • Menorrhagia (initiated when menstruation has started), 1g 3 times daily for up to 4 days; maximum 4g daily
  • Hereditary angioedema, 1–1.5g 2–3 times daily
  • Epistaxis, 1g 3 times daily for 7 days
Aprotinin
  • Solution for infusion vials 500,000 Kallikrein inactivator units/50ml
Etamsylate
  • Solution for injection ampoules 250mg/2ml (unlicensed preparation)
