Domestic Abuse is defined by the UK Government as: 'any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over, who are or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to psychological, physical, sexual, financial and emotional'.
A Multi Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC) is a regular local meeting to discuss how to help victims at high risk of murder or serious harm. A domestic abuse specialist, police, children's social services, health and other relevant agencies all sit around the same table. They talk about the victim, the family and the perpetrator, and share information. The meeting is confidential.
The purpose of the Domestic Abuse, Stalking, and Honour Based Violence checklist is to give a consistent and simple tool for practitioners who work with adult victims of domestic abuse in order to help them identify those who are at high risk of harm and whose cases should be referred to a MARAC meeting in order to manage their risk. High risk is a score of 14 out of the 24.
