5.5 Anthelmintics

SELF-CARE: NHS England has published guidance for various common conditions for which over the counter (OTC) items should not be routinely prescribed in primary care. One of these conditions is threadworms.

Many of these products are cheap to buy and are readily available OTC along with advice from pharmacies. Some self-care medicines are available from shops and supermarkets. 

Other agents may be prescribed where appropriate, and in line with indications on a named patient basis only. Further advice and information can be obtained from the Microbiologists.

Mebendazole
  • Chewable tablets sugar free 100mg (£1.34 = 6 chewable tablets)
  • Oral suspension 100mg/5ml (£1.55 = 30ml)
