- There may be some exceptional circumstances where it would be safer for the patient if the GP assumed prescribing responsibility, for example, where the patient cannot be seen by secondary care clinicians. In such cases the GP and consultant should agree a clear management plan specific to the individual patient which clearly specifies the GP responsibilities including when secondary care advice is needed.
