Consultant to Consultant referrals
Devon wide agreement on managing Consultant to Consultant referrals has been reached. The LMC the CCG and all Trusts have been involved in simplifying the pathway which can be seen in the form of a flow chart here.
This guidance applies to referrals to NHS service from both NHS and private consultants.

In the majority of cases, where a consultant believes a patient needs to seek the opinion of a consultant colleague then they should make that referral without involving the GP but simply copying them in.
If there is doubt about the need for an onward referral or about the specialty then the consultant will refer back to the GP.
