Part of the Optimising Referrals LES this year was to provide GPs with five top tips from consultants in three chosen specialities. The specialities chosen in consultation with the Local Medical Committee (LMC) were Cardiology, Dermatology and Gastroenterology.

Following discussions with several consultants from different localities it became clear that the more information given in a referral letter, the greater the usefulness of the information which is received back. One learning point was that it can be difficult to pick out the relevant details provided within the referral paperwork consultants receive and that they would appreciate if relevant past medical history or drugs were mentioned within the body of the letter. Considering how referrals are viewed when received by secondary care can change practice when writing a referral letter.
