EGU Emergency Gynaecology Unit Referrals from Primary Care - Western Locality

Key Messages

  • Referrals taken from GPs/Advanced Practitioners/ED/SHIP/ PAC
  • Referrals and advice to be made to:
    • EGU directly by phone (01752 763676 – Monday to Friday 8-6pm) or
    • on-call gynaecological SHO (bleep 0406) or
    • on-call registrar/consultant (bleep 0311)
Referral Criteria
  • Acute abdominal pain for less than one weeks’ duration
  • Torrential menorrhagia with Hb less than 90 or symptoms of anaemia
  • Persistent bleeding post miscarriage, termination, delivery, MVA or ERPOC
  • Lost coils
  • Post-operative complications that are likely to require ultrasound

ED or 999 should continue to be used for life threatening injuries and illnesses.

Referral Criteria

Exclusion Criteria

  • Haemodynamically unstable patient
  • Longstanding history of pain or bleeding (unless acute episode). Refer these patients to Gynaecology outpatients or post-menopausal bleeding clinic
  • Postmenopausal bleeding
  • Patient requiring a stretcher or bed

  • Presenting problem
Patients attending EGU should report to Lancaster suite main reception and wait in the Gynaecology outpatients area.
