The Cumberland Centre - Minor Injury Unit - Western locality

Key Messages

The Cumberland centre is a nurse-led minor injury unit open daily 0800-1800.

The MIU can manage conditions such as:

  • Wounds, including those which need closure; bites, skin tears, lacerations
  • Closed fractures
  • Dislocation of phalanges and shoulders (x-ray hours only)
  • Infected wounds
  • Soft tissue injuries including removal foreign bodies
  • Minor, non-penetrating eye injuries
  • Minor ENT injuries, including mild epistaxis
  • Minor head injuries (no LOC, no anticoagulation, no alcohol)
  • Minor burns and scalds
  • Mild symptoms of infection
  • Sprains/strains
  • Asthma
X-Ray Imaging:

The X-ray facilities are available 8:45 to 18:00 – 7 days a week for patients who meet the following criteria:

Adults:
  • Indication – suspected fracture, foreign body
  • Area – hand, finger, thumb, scaphoid views, forearm, elbow, humerus, shoulder, clavicle, foot/toes, ankle, knee, tib/fib

Over 2 years:

  • Indication – suspected fracture, foreign body
  • Area – hand, finger, thumb, scaphoid views, forearm, elbow, clavicle, foot/toes, ankle, knee, tib/fib

Out of Scope

*If you or the patient suspect they have symptoms related to COVID-19, please do not signpost the patient to this service. Patients should also not phone this service as they do not have the facilities to deal with calls*.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Head injuries under 1 or over 65 years of age, loss of consciousness or amnesia, bleeding/clotting disorder, anticoagulant
  • Drug or alcohol intoxication

ED or 999 should continue to be used for life threatening injuries and illnesses.

If your patient does not meet the criteria outlined above for conditions managed at the Cumberland Centre, please signpost to other urgent care services available.

  • This is a Nurse-led service – There are no Doctors on site.
  • If you are a clinician working within a 111 or IUC environment and have been handed this case and/or have overridden a disposition, please be sure that the service is able to meet the needs of the patient before signposting. You may need to call them first to clarify this.

Unless an appointment has been booked, ask the patient to self-present. Patients should go to the main reception on arrival to book in.
