5.1.8 Sulfonamides and trimethoprim

Trimethoprim
  • Tablets 100mg (£0.97 = 28 tablets), 200mg (£1.87 = 14 tablets)
  • Oral suspension sugar free 50mg/5ml (£4.12 = 100ml)

Indications

Notes

  1. Trimethoprim may be considered or advised by specialists in pregnancy
    1. It is recommended that women who need to take trimethoprim during the first trimester also take high dose folic acid (5mg daily) until week 12 of pregnancy
    2. Avoid trimethoprim if the woman has a low folate status or is on a folate antagonist (e.g. antiepileptic or proguanil)
  2. Catheter can be changed or remain in situ
Co-trimoxazole
  • Tablets 80mg/400mg (£1.68 = 28 tablets)
  • Oral suspension sugar free 40mg/200mg/5ml (£11.86 = 100ml)
  • Oral suspension 80mg/400mg/5ml (£13.55 = 100ml)
  • Solution for infusion ampoule 80mg/400mg/5ml (must be diluted in sodium chloride 0.9% or glucose 5% - seek advice) (£4.72 = 1 ampoule)

Notes

  1. CSM recommends that co-trimoxazole should be limited to treatment and prevention of pneumocystis pneumonia.
